Abstract

In the state of art and science merging during the Renaissance, artworks usually had multiple meanings, such as artistry, scientific and ideology. The research mainly uses literature analysis and case analysis, takes Albrecht Dürer’s Praying Hands as an Example to explore the meaning in it from technique, principle, and notion. The research finds out art works like Praying Hands pursuing a type of beauty that is close to the reality and reflecting human nature, while artists regarding scientific theories as principles to verify their work. It reflects that artists focused on human-being and science. Further more, the research draws a conclusion that artists were in for a gradual awakening of humanism. Their notion integrated into the multiple meanings of art works, and spread widely with them, which promoted the development of humanism to some extent. The awakened self-consciousness in this process would also have a profound impact on the development of art in the future.
