Abstract

Ancient Chinese murals constitute a vital component of traditional Chinese culture, leaving behind an exceptionally brilliant cultural heritage throughout history. Focusing on the Yongle Palace murals as the research subject, this study examines the challenges in preserving ancient Chinese murals, focusing on the Yongle Palace murals—a masterpiece of Yuan Dynasty art renowned for its historical, artistic, and Daoist cultural significance. Key issues include material fragility, limited public accessibility, and insufficient protection of lesser-known mural heritage. Against the backdrop of China’s national cultural digitalization strategy, this research explores the systematic application of digital technologies—such as 3D modeling, virtual restoration, VR, and digital imaging—in mural preservation, restoration, and dissemination. By integrating a “conservation-research-utilization” model, the study proposes sustainable pathways for digital empowerment in cultural heritage revival. Findings highlight how digital tools not only enhance physical conservation but also enable innovative public engagement and educational practices. The research concludes that digital transformation offers a robust framework for protecting and revitalizing ancient murals, aligning technological advancement with cultural sustainability.
