Abstract

As China’s population continues to age at an accelerating pace, research and implementation of age-friendly smart home solutions have emerged as a critical frontier within interior design. While smart home systems hold significant potential to enhance the quality of life, security, and convenience for older adults, their actual adoption rates remain considerably lower than anticipated. Centring on “perceived usefulness” as the core variable, this paper examines the subjective cognitive and behavioural response mechanisms of elderly users during smart home utilisation. Drawing upon the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and its extensions (STAM, PD-STAM), it analyses six key influencing factors through the lens of technological integration points in interior space design: functional utility, interface friendliness, spatial coordination, emotional interactivity, collaborative mechanisms, and risk controllability. Furthermore, the paper introduces novel design concepts such as “multimodal interaction”, “emotion-linked lighting”, and “personalised usage algorithms”, offering innovative perspectives for future smart age-friendly design practices.
