- Abstract
The peony motif stands as one of China’s traditional decorative patterns. Having flourished since the Tang dynasty, it gained widespread popularity, particularly during the Song period when its integration with Yaozhou celadon ceramics enriched decorative themes. The composition of these patterns exhibited diverse forms, influenced by the varying shapes of the vessels they adorned. Through theoretical analysis of the peony motifs from the Yaozhou Kiln of the Song Dynasty, one may gain deeper insight into the artistic characteristics of these designs. Research into these motifs not only facilitates the reinterpretation of our nation’s traditional culture but also offers valuable references and inspiration for contemporary ceramic pattern design. This paper aims to explore the artistic characteristics of Song Dynasty Yaozhou kiln peony motifs in terms of craftsmanship, decoration, structure, and composition, thereby summarising the formal features embodied in these motifs.
