Abstract

Ground vibrations produced by train movement can adversely affect nearby structures and can cause inconvenience to occupants. Proper mitigation techniques for the train induced ground vibration can be adopted only after conducting ground vibration analysis by measuring and studying vibrations during dynamic loading. This study investigates the ground vibration induced by train movement and its impact on nearby structures and occupants by conducting a series of field tests. During the field tests, train induced ground vibrations were measured in peak particle velocity (PPV) by using iDynamics application placed at different locations from the track structure. The field tests were conducted at two locations in Thrissur district considering various influencing parameters such as distance from the center of the track, train speed, at-grade and embankment site conditions and the effect of trenches. The results showed that PPV values decrease significantly with increasing distance from the track, and high-speed trains produce greater vibration levels than low speed trains. The results also indicated that ground vibration decreases for embankment conditions when compared to at-grade conditions due to the damping effect of the fill material. Additionally, trenches in the path of wave propagation were found to be effective in reducing train induced vibration.
