- Abstract
This research aims at understanding the application of cryptography in the protection of communication, evaluating apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and OpenSSL. Despite using encryption methods including RSA, AES, ECC, such platforms possess risks including, metadata leaks, cryptographic deficiencies as well as insider’s threats. It was found that although WhatsApp currently has strong end-to-end encryption, its backup features are inadequate and reveal metadata. Telegram has added ‘Secret Chats’ to improve security but its MTProto communication protocol and cloud storage raise risks to the security of its users. Secure communications app OpenSSL becomes a problem for complexity and key management as the Heartbleed exploit showed. The study also reviews the creation of CipherX –practical and efficient text encryption, the Chrome extension. Having been developed to meet the need of secure communication needs CipherX has a good interface and a solid keys management system. This feature of integration allows the users to safeguard their data properly while at the same time making use of the convenience of commonly used Google Chrome browser interface. CipherX is depicted as a means of secure encrypted communication service that is easily accessible and navigable. The paper presents a comparison of cryptographic protocols, and assessment of the merits and demerits of existing architectures and technologies, and shows how tools like CipherX can complement and strengthen user security. Ideas are provided to improve security issues related to familiar social applications like WhatsApp, Telegram, and OpenSSL.
