Abstract

Accident prevention and safety assistance using Internet of Things (IoT) technology is becoming increasingly important as road accidents continue to pose a significant threat to human life. This paper proposes an IoT-based system to improve road safety by monitoring drivers’ behavior and detecting risky driving conditions. The system utilizes multiple sensors to detect drowsiness, alcohol consumption, and cardiac issues in drivers. An eye blink sensor detects driver fatigue by monitoring eye closure duration. If drowsiness is detected above a threshold, the system alerts the driver to stop the vehicle. An MQ-3 alcohol sensor measures the driver’s blood alcohol concentration through exhaled breath. If alcohol is detected above the legal limit, the system automatically shuts off the vehicle’s ignition. Additionally, a heart rate sensor continuously monitors the driver’s cardiac activity. Any irregularities trigger an alert that is broadcast to emergency contacts using IoT connectivity. The proposed system aims to prevent accidents caused by impaired driving before they occur. By leveraging IoT and sensor technology, it provides real-time monitoring of driver condition and automated safety interventions. Implementation of such systems could significantly reduce accidents caused by drowsiness, intoxication, and medical emergencies while driving. This research contributes to the development of intelligent transportation systems that enhance road safety through proactive accident prevention and rapid emergency response.
