Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative tool in mechanical engineering and applied mechanics, providing data-driven capabilities that complement classical numerical methods such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This study provides a systematic review of AI applications across major mechanical domains, highlighting advances in topology optimization, dynamic modeling, fault detection, and predictive maintenance. It identifies key challenges, including data scarcity, interpretability, and integration with Multiphysics systems, and proposes a structured five-stage framework for embedding AI into mechanical research and industrial practice. The research demonstrates how hybrid approaches, such as Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs), can integrate physical laws with data-based models to ensure accurate and physically consistent predictions. Additionally, it outlines future directions, including explainable AI, digital twin integration, and autonomous design, offering practical insights for designing intelligent, efficient, and adaptive engineering systems. Emerging Generative AI techniques will support autonomous mechanical design, enabling automated creation and optimization of components, materials, and structures. AI-driven modeling will play a vital role in sustainable engineering, optimizing energy consumption, material efficiency, and lifecycle performance.
