Abstract

Long queues at traditional billing counters significantly degrade the customer experience in retail environments and increase operational costs for stores. While existing smart cart solutions offer automated billing through computer vision or RFID, they often lack integrated packing systems and require costly exit gate infrastructure, leaving the packing process manual and the problem of queue congestion partially unsolved. This paper presents a novel intelligent shopping cart system that seamlessly integrates automatic billing with an automated packing mechanism. The solution utilizes a ESP32-CAM with a micro-YOLO-based vision system for real-time item detection and billing. A key innovation is its built-in packing system, which employs an algorithm to sort items by weight and fragility into reusable, eco-friendly bags. This allows for a complete self-checkout experience directly within the cart. Upon payment via an integrated interface, the bag is sealed as proof of purchase, enabling the customer to exit the store without any further queuing. Furthermore, the system supports group billing functionality. The proposed design offers a comprehensive and cost-effective alternative to current systems, aiming to eliminate checkout queues, reduce manpower costs, and minimize theft, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
