- Abstract
Crowdfunding has emerged as a vital instrument in modern finance, enabling startups, individuals, and nonprofits to raise funds for emergencies, projects, and causes, but existing centralized platforms such as GoFundMe, Kickstarter, and Indiegogo suffer from drawbacks including high transaction fees, limited donor control, lack of transparency, and risks of fraud and mismanagement. While decentralized crowdfunding solutions using blockchain and other distributed ledger technologies (DLTs) have been proposed to address these issues, blockchain-based systems such as Ethereum introduce new challenges, including high gas costs, scalability bottlenecks, and rigid legal compliance. To overcome these limitations, this project introduces HFund, a secure and transparent crowdfunding platform built on Hedera Hashgraph, an advanced DLT offering low-cost transactions, high throughput, and regulatory-friendly data handling. Unlike traditional blockchains, Hedera’s asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant (aBFT) consensus ensures fairness, strong security, and carbon-negative operations. HFund incorporates a donor-driven voting mechanism that ensures funds are released only with majority donor approval, thereby enhancing accountability and ethical fund utilization. By integrating these innovations, HFund demonstrates how distributed technologies can be leveraged not only for financial transparency but also for cybersecurity, compliance, and global scalability, positioning Hedera Hashgraph as a sustainable and user-friendly alternative for decentralized crowdfunding.
