- Abstract
This study investigates the estimation of Passenger Car Units (PCU) for various vehicle types under heterogeneous traffic conditions on multilane intercity highways. Data was collected from three highway sections, and PCU values were derived using three different methods: Dynamic PCU, Modified Dynamic PCU, and Multiple Non-Linear Regression (MLNR). The results revealed that the MLNR method provided higher PCU estimates for larger vehicles, with values of 1.42 for big utility cars and 4.74 for trucks in Section I, while the modified dynamic method yielded 1.39 for big utility cars and 4.11 for trucks. Conversely, the dynamic method yielded the lowest estimates, with PCUs of 1.36 for big utility cars and 3.98 for trucks. Additionally, the modified dynamic PCU method consistently outperformed the dynamic method across all vehicle types except for big utility cars. These findings underscore the effectiveness of the modified dynamic and MLNR methods for accurate PCU assessment, facilitating better traffic management and capacity planning.
