- Abstract
The present work is focused on examining the effect of reinforcement of Silicon carbide, Titanium diboride, or Silicon carbide+1wt% of Graphite in Aluminum-6061 alloy on mechanical, tribological, and surface morphology. The stir casting method was used to fabricate different composite specimens needed for different tests. For each of the composites, namely Al-6061+SiC; Al-6061+TiB2 and Al-6061+SiC+1 wt% Graphite, five samples with weight proportions of 3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 of the reinforcements were prepared in sufficient number to be used in various characterization tests. These sample specimens were examined by using computerised UTM testing machine, a SEM, a pin-on-disc device, a Brinell hardness tester, and a Talysurf surface roughness tester in compliance with a number of standards, including ASTM. For evaluating the characteristics of tensile strength, surface morphology, wear and frictional characteristics, hardness, surface roughness respectively. Comparing various properties of the sample specimens, Al-6061+7 wt % of SiC+1 wt% graphite HMMCs gave the better properties and is recommended as a suitable material for brake rotors in disc brake system because of their improved performance and longer lifespan.
