Abstract

In all aspects of our lives, IoT has paved way for smart appliances. Around 80% of the world is revolutionized by IoT technologies that make life easy. Considering the increased development of the marine activities globally, IoT is in demand to provide smart communication and navigation systems. Today the maritime sectors use advanced radio communication, electronic systems, satellite communication and navigation devices. Artificial Intelligence in addition to IoT has contributed to the key development of emergency positioning, navigation, trajectories prediction, cargo operations and much more. The measures taken enhance the protection of humankind in oceans, controls navigation, effectives of maritime devices. Here, we discuss the concepts of AI adapted in maritime IoT. It outlines the different techniques used uniquely in maritime communication, with advancement in other sectors. Furthermore, we survey the existing and emerging IoT technologies in maritime surveillance, trajectory predictions, fishery management, collision detection and AI in maritime sectors. Finally, we put forth the open challenges in satellite-terrestrial marine communication and highlights the future research needs in smart maritime sectors.
