Abstract

Polbeng 1 Research Vessel was built in 2025 at the Politeknik Negeri Bengkalis and in collaboration with CV Fatih Bahari Engineering. This vessel is made entirely of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic. This ship is assembled using a welding method carried out using X-groove welding. However, there are several theories that state that V-groove joints are better. So validation is needed on the strength of the Polbeng 1 Research Ship construction. The first validation was carried out by conducting tensile tests and bending tests; the standards used were ASTM D638 and ISO 527–2. The test results showed that the X joint had better strength compared to the strength of the V-groove with a reduction in tensile strength of the unwelded material of 24.3% and 26.8%, respectively. The bending strength also decreased by 11.35%. And 63.8%. The second validation was carried out by calculating the pressure on the shell bottom (PdBM) from the formula in the Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia 2021 regarding Classification and Construction Rules. The calculation results showed that the X-groove connection met the standards of the Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (BKI).
