Abstract

Under the background of the “dual-carbon” strategy, it is of great practical significance to explore the influence mechanism of corporate ESG performance on green technology innovation. Based on the data of Chinese A-share listed companies from 2013 to 2023, this paper constructs a double fixed-effects panel regression model to empirically test the impact of ESG on green technology innovation and further explores the mediating role of financing constraints and analysts’ attention, as well as the moderating effect of executive compensation. It is found that corporate ESG ratings significantly and positively affect green technological innovation; ESG indirectly promotes green technological innovation through the paths of alleviating financing constraints and enhancing analysts’ attention; and executive compensation incentives can enhance the positive effect of ESG on innovation. Heterogeneity analysis shows that ESG has a more significant green technological innovation promotion effect on non-polluting enterprises and state-owned enterprises. This paper expands the theoretical research in the field of ESG and green technological innovation and provides empirical support and practical insights for corporate strategic management and policy making.
