Abstract

This study aims to explore the dynamics of silence among female students (santri) who are survivors of sexual violence in the context of the trial of Moch Subchi Azal Tsani (Bechi). Using Paula Saukko’s multidimensional method, this research combines cultural, discursive, and material analysis to examine how these survivors, as subalterns, navigate systems of power in Islamic boarding schools. Secondary data were collected through writings uploaded on the Project Multatuli platform by a survivor who also served as a witness in the trial. Data were analyzed through a triangulated approach, integrating cultural representations of santri, the discourses of advocacy, and the material realities of survivors’ marginalization. Data validation was ensured through source triangulation and discussions with experts in sexual violence and postcolonial studies. The findings reveal that the silence of female santri is not due to an inability to speak, but to a lack of space to be heard, perpetuated by the dominant power structures in these institutions. This study underscores the need to view female santri as subalterns and offers recommendations for improving recovery and support systems in Islamic boarding schools.
