- Abstract
With the rapid development of modern technology, immersive narrative spaces now encompass not only digital video interactions but also emphasise the physical space and performers’ artistry to enhance the sense of immersion. This paper employs a case study method, using the Sleep No More theatre in Shanghai as an exemplar of the interplay between physical space and live performance. Firstly, it analyses how the narrative space conveys its story. Secondly, it examines how performers advance the narrative within the spatial context. The paper then synthesises audience experiences gleaned from interviews regarding their on-site sensations. The argument is that immersive theatre uses the architectural fabric of the space to present scenes from Macbeth while simultaneously bringing characters to life through the performers’ physicality and emotional expression. Consequently, the fusion of spatial design and performance augments the audience’s immersive experience.
