- Abstract
The growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on translation practices has prompted renewed attention to how higher-education lecturers.\ perceive and integrate these technologies in classroom settings. This study explores the attitudes and acceptance of translation lecturers in Indonesia and Timor-Leste toward students’ use of AI-powered translation tools, such as Google Translate, DeppL, and ChatGPT, and investigates factors influencing their willingness to acknowledge and respond to students’ use of such technologies in translation pedagogy. Using a qualitative-descriptive comparative case study, data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions (FGDs) with lecturers from public and private universities. Findings reveal that while most lecturers recognize the inevitability of AI in modern translation learning and view it as beneficial, many still express reservations regarding students’ overreliance and lack of critical engagement. Lecturers generally appreciate the convenience and linguistic support offered by AI-powered translation tools, but they also highlight concerns related to academic integrity, diminished analytical involvement, and the potential erosion of translation competence. These results indicate an attitudinal tension between acceptance and caution, emphasizing the need for clear pedagogical guidance and ethical considerations when addressing students’ use of AI translation in the classroom.
