Abstract

Autonomous learning is becoming an effective technique to improve students’ skills. Learning a language is focusing on having a better understanding of the use of language itself and students can improve it through autonomous learning. The aim of this study is to examine the role of teachers, students, and technology for fostering autonomous language learning in the digital era. This study used a literature study. The data collected from books, journals, proceedings, etc. This study found that teachers have played a significant role in promoting autonomous learning in language learning. Teachers should be able to conduct a thorough needs analysis of students considering their learning objectives, attitudes, approaches, proficiency, and past experiences. Further, to assist and strengthen students’ autonomy, teachers play roles in constructing learning designs, counseling, and advising students’ autonomous learning using technology. In line with teachers’ roles, learners who implement autonomous learning should be able to determine their learning requirements and how to address the challenges they encounter while learning. Digital technology is considered one of the most effective tools for promoting autonomy as it allows teachers to serve as facilitators in the classroom, while also enabling students to develop their autonomy in learning language beyond the classroom.
