- Abstract
This study examines how cultural enclave tourism shapes cross‐cultural identity and subsequently drives tourism economic development. Focusing on Korean tourists at the historic Korean Provisional Government site in Shanghai, the research employs a qualitative grounded theory approach with in-depth interviews analyzed through open, axial, and selective coding. Findings reveal that visits to the enclave not only reinforce national identity but also foster intercultural appreciation, creating what is termed “transnational identity affirmation.” Visitors expressed heightened pride in their heritage and gratitude for the host country’s preservation efforts, which in turn stimulated behaviors such as repeat visitation, active advocacy, and positive word-of-mouth. These behavioral outcomes are shown to contribute to sustainable tourism economic development, suggesting that cross-cultural identity transformation can serve as a strategic catalyst for enhancing tourism revenue and destination branding.
