Abstract

The Valley of Amazement sets the story on the background of the end of Qing Dynesty and the start of the Repubic of China. It tells the ups and downs of a Chinese-American Violet and her growth footprint in every stage of life. Throughout her journey, Violet experienced multiple psychological traumas, including abandonment by her mother, the loss of her daughter, and the death of her lover. From self-psychological perspective, Violet’s growth process illustrates key concepts from self psychology, such as primary narcissism, selfobject transference, and the formation of a coherent self. This paper intends to analyze Violet’s behavior patterns, growth, and awakening in the work from concepts of Kohut’s tripolar self in self-psychology.
