Abstract

The rapid pace of urbanization has transformed lifestyles, leading to increased stress, anxiety, and lifestyle-related diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, obesity, and mental health issues. These challenges stem from sedentary work environments, digital overload, and limited access to holistic wellness practices. As a result, urban populations experience deteriorating physical and mental health, contributing to rising healthcare costs and excessive dependence on pharmaceutical treatments. The paper examines how yoga and mindfulness contribute to comprehensive well-being and sustainability in urban living as these ancient practices offer scientifically backed solutions for enhancing physical and emotional health. It draws upon existing research that illustrates how these ancient disciplines aid in managing chronic conditions, supporting cardiovascular health, and enhancing cognitive functioning. The study also incorporates a case study on the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences’ integrative treatment model, emphasizing yoga may be incorporated with conventional healthcare. The paper concludes with suggestions to integrate yoga and mindfulness in public healthcare, workplace wellness programs, educational institutions, and urban design that can make them accessible to the population residing in cities.
