Abstract

The global population, currently estimated at approximately 8.2 billion, is projected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050, necessitating significant enhancements in agricultural productivity under limited cultivable land. However, monocropping systems have contributed to soil and water degradation, excessive dependence on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, and a decline in soil fertility. Moreover, anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs) are expected to reduce global agricultural productivity by up to 15.9% by 2080. Therefore, sustainable food production requires ecologically balanced and resource-efficient systems. In this context, intercropping systems provide a resilient approach through enhanced yield stability, improved resource-use efficiency, biological nitrogen fixation, and suppression of pests and weeds. This structured review critically synthesizes recent advances in intercropping systems integrated with climate-smart agriculture (CSA), the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), precision agriculture, and energy-smart agricultural technologies for sustainable and resilient food production. Relevant literature published between 2010 and 2025 was analyzed to evaluate the ecological, technological, and sustainability outcomes associated with smart intercropping systems. Specifically, the analysis encompassed IoT-based monitoring systems, AI-driven decision support frameworks, precision irrigation, nutrient management, and carbon-smart farming practices. This review highlights that integrating ecological intercropping principles with digital agricultural technologies enhances soil health, climate resilience, input-use efficiency, and farm sustainability while supporting sustainable intensification and Agriculture 4.0.
