Abstract

Tinospora cordifolia (Giloy), a perennial climbing plant of the family Menispermaceae, is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine for its wide range of medicinal properties and adaptability to tropical and subtropical regions. It is rich in carbohydrates, proteins, dietary fibers, and essential minerals, along with a wide range of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, berberine, and magnoflorine; diterpenoid lactones, columbin, and tinosporide; glycosides, tinocordiside; steroids, β-sitosterol; flavonoids, quercetin; phenolic compounds, ellagic acid; and immunoactive polysaccharides, arabinogalactan, and α-D-glucan, the plant has been reported to possess remarkable immunomodulatory, antimicrobial, antifungal, hepatoprotective, and antioxidant activities. However, the agricultural potential of the plant, apart from its pharmacological activities, has not been explored. This review aims to focus on the existing literature on the phytochemical composition and pharmacodynamics of T. cordifolia and assesses the potential of the plant in agricultural applications. It is suggested that the plant can be used as a botanical biopesticide, plant defense elicitor, growth promoter, and soil health enhancer. Some of the research gaps have also been identified, which can be filled to ensure the integration of the plant into environmentally sustainable agricultural systems.
