- Abstract
Due to their unique optical properties, tunable surface chemistry, excellent biocompatibility and low toxicity, CQDs have emerged as a versatile class of zero-dimensional nanomaterials. Recently, the integration of green synthesis approaches with elemental doping strategies has created new research avenues for the sustainable development of high-performance CQDs. This review article gives an overview of recent advances in the green synthesis of element doped carbon quantum dots taking into account environmentally benign precursors such as plant extracts, biomass waste, and natural polymers together with energy-efficient routes of the synthesis including hydrothermal, microwave-assisted, and sonochemical methods. Special emphasis is placed on the effect of heteroatom doping (such as nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, and metals) on the electronic structure, surface functionality, quantum yield, and photoluminescence behavior of CQDs. The mechanisms for modulation of the properties induced by doping are critically discussed, with insights into structure-property relationships. Furthermore, the review also emphasizes the potential applications of green synthesized doped CQDs in different fields such as bioimaging, drug delivery, sensing, photocatalysis, energy conversion and environmental remediation. Despite the significant progress, issues associated with large-scale production, reproducibility and precise control of doping configurations are still persisting. Future perspectives are presented to overcome these limitations and promote the translation of sustainable CQD technologies into practical applications. This review is intended to be a useful resource for researchers working on the design of next-generation eco-friendly nanomaterials with enhanced functionality.
