- Abstract
This paper cryptanalyzes a block cipher proposed by Ahmed Desoky et al., which essentially is a variant of the classical Hill Cipher. The researchers have modified the cipher wherein, plaintext is taken in the form of rectangular matrices of size 3X8 in the illustration of the cipher. The claim of the authors is that, since the plaintext is in the form of rectangular matrix, there can be no modular arithmetic inverse for the plaintext. Thus, the cipher overcomes the weakness of the classical Hill Cipher, the known plaintext attack vulnerability. The cipher does show resistance against the known plaintext vulnerability exhibited by the classical Hill Cipher. However, the cryptosystem proposed by the researchers’ exhibits weaknesses in the face of the chosen plaintext attack, which is employed in this paper. The cipher is broken with the help of 8 chosen plaintexts.
