- Abstract
Cardiac Glycosides along with other bioactive compounds are found in Nerium oleander, which is a plant used in India for its ornamental values. The study presented here classify and identifies the elements toxic in nature in this plant by using GC-MS MS. In this study fresh leaves were taken and were dried in shade, pulverised and were further taken for solvent extraction with pet ether and diethyl ether. The extract left was then taken further for its analysis using GC-MS MS to attain the mass of its chemical components. To make our study we took the plants from various sited of two cities i.e. Jhansi and Delhi to check the difference in both the samples in terms of their toxicity. During the analysis many toxic components like digitoxigenin, neriifolin with other metabolites like terpenoids, phytosterols were seen. The presence of these toxins made the plant a potent cardiac and neuro-toxic plant. With the help of this study we found the toxicity in the plant with GC-MS MS as it is a consistent tool for quantification and etection of any toxic components present. This study will help in toxicological sketching and identification of poison in forensic analysis of any poisoning cases related with Nerium oleander.
