Abstract

The influence of generation and gender on media consumption habits is a particularly important topic in contemporary media studies. Using an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, this study analyzed media consumption patterns among Generation Z (Gen Z) in Indonesia. At the first stage, the survey was given to 396 high school students to measure their information consumption habits on both conventional and digital media among Gen Z. Additionally, this study aims to reveal the differences in information consumption based on gender. In addition to quantitative data, this research also analyzed qualitative data from the focus groups of selected respondents to understand their reasons for consuming information through the media. The finding shows that Gen Z demonstrates a strong preference for digital media, which offers quick, interactive, and captivating content. The findings of this research also support the hypothesis that males and females have different information consumption patterns. Furthermore, Generation Z exhibits a marked transition from conventional media to digital platforms, indicative of their adaptation to technological advancements and information formats that align more closely with their preferences and consumption habits. Overall, these findings are consistent with the Uses and Gratification theory.
