Abstract

At the end of the 19th century, European musical nationalism was on the rise, and composers mostly constructed cultural identities with their own folk materials. The Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, as a representative, has long embodied a strong national cultural identity in his compositions. However, in his Symphony No. 9, “From the New World”, which was completed during his travels in the United States, he absorbed African-American spirituals and Native American musical styles, demonstrating an open, cross-cultural nationalist stance. Existing studies mostly focus on the stylistic characterization of melody and rhythm, but lack a systematic exploration of their cultural integration mechanisms. Taking the four movements of the symphony as objects, this paper uses documentary method and musical analysis to sort out the specific embodiment of American elements in melodic construction, rhythmic organization and orchestral layout, and to explore their structural integration in the symphonic genre. The study finds that Dvořák embodied inclusive nationalist expression by fusing spirituals and Indian rhythmic vocabulary into European symphonic grammar through creative imitation of exotic musical styles rather than direct quotation. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the diversity of late nineteenth-century nationalist music and provides case support for cross-cultural music-making.
