Abstract

This paper studies the aria “Possente spirto, e formidabil nume” in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, and analyses its artistic characteristics through multiple angles and levels to show the aesthetics and skills of arias in early Baroque operas. At present, the studies of Monteverdi’s opera L’Orfeo is in the preliminary level, especially the analysis of the aria, which creates a space for research. The “Possente spirto, e formidabil nume” in L’Orfeo is the most lyrical aria in this opera. This study can give an in-depth understanding of Monteverdi’s creative methods and how to shape characters and express emotions. The aria is a milestone in the history of opera development. It marks the gradual maturity of opera from the early experimental stage, setting a model for later generations of opera creation. The themes of love, courage and faith conveyed through the music transcend the boundaries of time and space, triggering the emotional resonance of listeners in different eras and cultural backgrounds.
