- Abstract
In the process of commercialisation of contemporary Chinese cinema, Jiang Wen, with his distinctive personal style, has emerged as a quintessential representative of the intersection between art and commerce. This paper examines the aesthetic polarisation in Jiang Wen's films within the context of commercialisation, analysing it from three dimensions: audience reception, market demand, and the fusion of art and commerce. Through a systematic exploration of his creative background, stylistic characteristics, and specific works, the study investigates how Jiang Wen seeks a balance between artistic pursuit and box office pressure, and how this process results in divided evaluations from audiences and the market. Using The Sun Also Rises, Let the Bullets Fly, and Hidden Man as case studies, this paper elucidates the challenges and opportunities faced by Jiang Wen's films amidst commercial immersion, highlighting their profound implications for the future of art films. The research demonstrates that Jiang Wen's work reflects both a steadfast commitment to personal style and a flexible response to the commercialised environment, offering a critical perspective for understanding the dual nature of Chinese cinema.
