Abstract

In an era of deepening globalization and multicultural exchange, language, as a crucial carrier of culture, plays an increasingly significant role in cross-cultural research. Cross-cultural linguistic studies not only help break down cultural barriers and promote international exchange and cooperation but also advance cultural diversity and foster a shared future for humanity. To systematically map the development trajectory and evolving trends in international cross-cultural linguistic research, this study employs quantitative bibliometric analysis using the CiteSpace visualization tool. This study analyzed 986 relevant publications from the Web of Science (WOS) Core Collection (2011-2025) through keyword clustering analysis and timeline analysis. This reveals core research themes, knowledge structures, and dynamic shifts, clarifying research hotspots, the knowledge base, and developmental pathways within the field, thereby providing references for future linguistic theory innovation and practical applications. Key findings include: 1) Keyword clustering identified four core dimensions (Intercultural Interaction, Hong Kong, Intercultural Communication, Visual Media) and six derivative dimensions (Intercultural Processes, Foreign Language Classroom, Communication, Adolescent Interaction, Ecological Perspective, Intercultural Studies), clearly delineating the field’s core research clusters. 2) Timeline analysis revealed three distinct phases: the Foundational Theory Phase (2011-2015), the Contextual Expansion Phase (2016-2020), and the Innovative Perspective Breakthrough Phase (2021-2025), demonstrating an evolution from establishing core concepts to application in specific contexts, and finally to breakthroughs in novel perspectives. In summary, while classic themes in international cross-cultural linguistic research continue to deepen, emerging themes like the ecological perspective and drama pedagogy are gaining prominence. Based on this, the study recommends deeper interdisciplinary integration of themes for future research.
