Abstract

Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education has become increasingly prevalent, offering new opportunities to enhance learning experiences across various disciplines, including language learning. As digital technologies evolve, AI’s ability to provide personalized and adaptive learning environments holds significant promise for fostering student autonomy. This study explores the role of AI in enhancing autonomous learning in language education through a case study of university students in Indonesia. Over a semester, the research examines students’ experiences using AI-driven platforms, including Duolingo and Grammarly. The study collects data through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and questionnaires using a mixed-methods approach. The findings indicate that AI positively contributes to students’ autonomy by enabling personalized learning experiences, flexible study schedules, and real-time feedback. However, challenges such as technological dependence and limited human interaction are identified, particularly in verbal language skills development. The study offers practical insights into optimizing AI integration in language learning environments. It highlights the need for improved digital infrastructure and teacher training to maximize AI’s potential in promoting independent learning.
