Abstract

Female masculinity is a concept that establishes masculinity traits performed by female characters, and one context that embodies the idea is female masculinity in literary work. This is the implementation of women’s character resistance to the stereotype labeled on them in a patriarchal society. Through their utterances, this research analyzes the form and meaning of Indonesian women’s resistance implemented in Sekar Ayu Asmara’s Pintu Terlarang (2004). The analysis is conducted in the context of patriarchal domination over Indonesian women. The main data is obtained from one female character in Sekar Ayu Asmara’s Pintu Terlarang (2004) novel, Menik Sasongko. The data is supported by secondary data consisting of several articles containing the masculine traits of female characters in Indonesian novels. The librarian research is conducted by collecting the data. The techniques used are: reading the novel, taking notes on female characters’ utterances, selecting the dialogues, and classifying them into some speech act categories. The descriptive analysis method is used by implementing two main theories, they are Bem’s Sex Role Inventory (1982) theory about masculine traits, and Smelser’s symbolism interaction theory (2013). Moreover, those main theories are supported by Searle’s Theory of Speech Act (1976). The formal and informal method is implemented in presenting the findings. The finding shows that a female character, Menik Sasongko, shows the domination traits as the establishment of female masculinity. The form and meaning of women’s resistance are shown with domination traits by the utterances in various forms, for instance: metaphors and repetition. How the utterances are said is direct, yet the intentions are indirect. This is conducted to achieve their goals.
