Abstract

Language maintenance and language shift are inseparable phenomena. The Dayak Tunjung language, spoken in West Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan, shows both signs of shift and persistence. Language shift occurs as younger generations increasingly use Indonesian, influenced by formal education and interethnic marriages. However, the Dayak Tunjung language continues to persist in certain domains, particularly within the family, which enables children to acquire and use the language. This study aims to describe the domains of Dayak Tunjung language use as a form of regional language maintenance. A sociolinguistic approach was employed, with data collected through interviews and observations. The findings indicate that the Dayak Tunjung language is still used in the family, neighborhood, religious, and occupational domains. These findings highlight the crucial role of specific social domains in sustaining the vitality of regional languages.
