- Abstract
As a significant Mahayana Buddhist scripture formed in China in the early 8th century, the dissemination and reception of the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment profoundly reflect the diverse pathways of Buddhist cultural exchange and localisation in East Asia. Employing primarily textual analysis, comparative research and historical investigation, this paper systematically traces the dissemination trajectories and regional variations of this Buddhist scripture and its commentaries across multiple regions of East Asia. This dissemination process not only illustrates the multiple dimensions of textual reception within Buddhism but also reveals the cultural agency and adaptive innovations demonstrated by various regions in East Asia during the assimilation of Chinese Buddhism.
