- Abstract
The standard Consumer Price Index fails to capture the true cost-of-living increases for different income groups. Lower income households allocate a larger share of their earnings to inelastic necessities. This paper introduces the Differential-Income-Calibrated-Expenditure-Burden index. This mathematical formula integrates expenditure weights with category specific price elasticity multipliers. Calculations using 2023 macroeconomic data indicate that the lowest income quintile faces a 21.9 percent higher true inflation burden compared to the highest quintile. The standard metric only shows a 14.1 percent difference. The results show the hidden economic strain on vulnerable populations. The objective quantification of purchasing power erosion improves economic analysis.
