Abstract

The pristine LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 microspheres (P-NCM523) have been synthesized by a solid state method. To improve the lithium storage performances, Li2MoO4 layer has been coated on the surface of P-NCM523 by the facile reaction between lithium residue and H3PO4.12MoO3.24H2O. The Li2MoO4 coating can not only remove the lithium residue, but also facilitate the lithium ion transport of P-NCM523 electrode. The Li2MoO4 coated LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 microspheres (C-NCM523) exhibits enhanced electrochemical energy performances compared to P-NCM523, including high capacity (175.2 mA h g–1 at 0.2 C), excellent rate capability (109 mA h g–1 at 8 C), and good cycling stability (97% discharge capacity retention after 50 cycles). The findings may open up new opportunities in designing high-performance layered oxide cathode materials for lithium ion batteries
