Abstract

The research will investigate what reasons were behind US decision on conducting an intervention operation against Nicolas Maduro in 2026, with a focus on the political situation in Florida, as well as the connection between drugs and terrorism in terms of the narrative. As opposed to conducting field research, secondary literature sources will be used - articles in scholarly journals and government documents, as well as global media coverage, all specifically chosen for having anything to do with the conflict between Venezuela and the USA. It was found that the intervention was more complicated than routine measures and was driven by the necessity to win upcoming elections. The intervention based on the use of national legislation to punish another country’s head is a part of the broader strategy aimed to maintain dominance in the region and respond to Russia’s growing influence there. Such a one-sided intervention by one country sets a bad precedent for other countries’ future actions. However, it fits perfectly into the immediate internal interests of the US. The next step of research must be investigation of economic impacts of similar interventions.
