- Abstract
The aim of the research is to present a comprehensive illustration of family communication changes in two significant post-divorce periods, namely the single parent adaptation and the stepfamily recomposition. Through the combination of two qualitative studies in West Java (Bandung and Sukabumi), this study discusses how the components of Inter-Action Adaptation Theory (IAT) and children’s privacy management (CPM) patterns are applicable for enhancing family resilience. The approach is qualitative with phenomenological and descriptive method and the key informants amount to 6. Findings– It is revealed that the communication adaptation of the single parents is highly dependent on interactional synchronisation of biological needs, social expectations and individual’s wishes. At the stage of blended family, meanwhile, children as personal space management (privacy) and as mediated communication use these two devices as self-protection in facing troubles. The interaction between parents’ democratic openness and respect for children’s privacy was found to be predictive of long-term harmony.
