Abstract

Bali Bombings I and II were tourism crises that became international spotlight and left quite deep scars on Balinese society for the past two decades. This crisis caused a drastic decline in tourist visits and the emergence of travel warnings issued by foreign governments, including Australia, United States, several European countries, and Japan. This study aims to analyze the forms of resilience and sustainability strategies by Bali tourism stakeholders in dealing with the crisis caused by Bali Bombings I and II. Using qualitative descriptive methods, this article shows that Bali with a strong socio-cultural foundation is always able to create an opportunity even in the most difficult situations. The government sets internal policies and conducts diplomacy with affected countries. Tourism promotion is intensively carried out through MICE-based tourism, such as the 9th ASEAN Summit, the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, and Pesta Kesenian Bali (PKB). Uniqueness is seen in the use of local wisdom as a strengthening of community mentality through media campaigns, Pemrayascita Durmenggala ceremonies, and Pamarisudha Karipubhaya ceremonies. Balinese people understand that tourism recovery is not only to improve their economic welfare, but also an effort to maintain the Balinese identity that has existed for hundreds of years.
