Abstract

Indigenous peoples of a region are a group of people who in the midst of this era of modernization and globalization are struggling to maintain their existence and culture. Indigenous communities in coastal areas or close to the sea area are no exception. Through the study of documentary films, this research aims to understand the local wisdom and cultural values maintained by the lives of sea tribes on two different continents, namely the Panglong sea tribe in the Bintan area of the Riau Islands of Indonesia and the Makah tribe who are indigenous Americans living in the Washington state area of the United States. Using library research and contextual approach to documentary filmmaking, this research further examines both the narrative and cinematographic perspectives of documentary films. The results of this research show that the two indigenous society take the sea as an inseparable part of their culture and daily world. Religion life, cultural ritual traditions, environmental protection, and cross-generational inheritance of traditions, all of these aspects are always connected to the only pillar of their identity, the sea.
