Abstract

The metaverse, along with Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), presents transformative opportunities for cultural heritage preservation. These technologies offer immersive and interactive experiences that transcend geographic and physical limitations, allowing for virtual reconstructions of historical sites, enhanced storytelling of intangible traditions, and expanded access for education and tourism. This paper explores the role of the metaverse in preserving both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. It outlines current applications, highlights successful case studies, and critically discusses the challenges related to authenticity, technological access, and sustainability. By analyzing these developments, the paper argues that while the metaverse cannot replace physical preservation, it provides an essential complementary tool for engaging younger generations, supporting educational initiatives, and democratizing access to cultural heritage. The paper concludes with reflections on future directions and policy implications to ensure inclusive and ethical digital heritage practices.
