Abstract

The concept of heteronormativity is not acceptable anymore in real life. In line with that, sex is also realized to be not binary and so is gender. Gender identity which concerns with a person’s internal feeling about his gender whatever his/her given sex also becomes complicated. This situation is represented in Kacen Callender’s novel entitled Felix Ever After through the main character named Felix Love. The purpose of this paper is to analyze Felix’s continuing confusion on his gender identity even after his coming out as a trans-male. Several concepts are borrowed to support the analysis; namely, the concepts on transitioning, transgender, coming out, outing, and demiboy. The methods applied are library research method, close reading technique, qualitative research method, and contextual research method. The result shows that transitioning as a trans-male is not the end of the process of finding the suitable gender identity. Felix Love’s realization that he is a trans-male or trans guy who likes males or Felix Love’s gender identity is as a transgay still does not make him feel represented. His search for specific gender identity that is suitable for him comes to an end when he finally finds the term demiboy. The richness of the ever-evolving gender identity opens many new paths for the next researchers.
