- Abstract
English, as a global language is rich with proverbs that contain natural elements. The English proverbs reflect how English speaking people view the world, including the environment they live in. This study explores English proverbs related to environment using an ecolinguistic approach developed by Bundsgaard and Steffensen [1]. Using the data from The Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs, the study discusses English proverbs related to environment from the perspective of ideological, sociological, and biological dimensions. Findings reveal that while English proverbs commonly promote environmental conservation and encourage harmony with nature, other proverbs contain utilitarian ideologies and emphasize natural harmony. Applying the triple-dimension model (ideologics, socialogics, and biologics), this study demonstrates that English proverbs both support and undermine sustainable nature.
