Abstract

Kobhung, a traditional architectural space typical of Madurese houses, functions not only as a place to rest or receive guests but also embodies the rich local knowledge rooted in cultural values, Islamic spirituality, and the ecological wisdom of the Madurese community. This study aims to examine kobhung through ethnomathematics and ethnoscience approaches to uncover the relationship between spatial structure, cultural symbolism, and Islamic values internalized in daily life. Through qualitative analysis based on literature review and participatory observation, the study finds that the shape, size, and orientation of kobhung reflect local mathematical concepts such as symmetry, proportion, and the use of numbers and patterns. From an ethnoscientific perspective, kobhung exemplifies the use of natural materials, principles of natural ventilation, and an understanding of the local climate, which aligns with sustainability principles. The integration of Islamic values is evident in its layout, which embodies social manners and ethics, as well as in its spiritual role as a space for meditation and dhikr. Thus, kobhung can be understood as an integrative expression of science, culture, and religion that shapes the cosmology of Madurese society. This study contributes to the development of contextual education grounded in local culture and Islam, relevant to sustainability principles and the strengthening of local identity.
