- Abstract
Shylock in Shakespeare’s comedy “The Merchant of Venice” is rich in character traits, and the history of his acceptance in China has gone through a process from “sympathy” to “criticism” to “praise” to “mixed evaluation”. “This is because the stereotype of Shylock as an “antagonist” is easily influenced by the historical context and personal discourse of the recipient. However, the stereotype of Shylock as an “antagonist” still has its own significance in the light of the significance of many “antagonists” in Shakespeare’s comedies and his motivation.
