Abstract

This study investigates the creation and use of multimodal English test items specifically designed for vocational education, utilizing well-established language learning theories. The project seeks to address the deficiencies in present assessment techniques, which frequently exhibit a lack of complexity, equilibrium between lower-level and higher-level cognitive abilities, and integration with online platforms. The descriptive qualitative methodology includes the perspectives of vocational education instructors, students, and educational technologists. These perspectives are gathered through semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and observations. The analysis emphasizes the congruence between test items and other language learning theories, including the Grammar-Translation Method, Structural Approach, Communicative Language Teaching, Multimodality, Task-Based Language Teaching, and Situated Learning Theory. The study highlights the significance of achieving a balance between lower-order thinking skills (LOTS) and higher-order thinking skills (HOTS), following Bloom’s Taxonomy. Utilizing multimodal assessment procedures, which involve the use of both visual and auditory stimuli, improves the efficiency of examinations by encouraging practical language usage and enhancing communicative skills. This study also highlights the importance of implementing advanced, technology-driven evaluations in vocational education to guarantee students’ preparedness and achievement in both academic and professional environments. The results indicate that utilizing a combination of different methods, backed by theories of language acquisition, offers a thorough assessment of language skills, involving practical situations and contexts that are crucial for vocational students.
