- Abstract
Gyeongyeon (經筵) was an imperial lecture system established in ancient China for the education of Emperor. It originated during the Western Han Dynasty and was officially formalized during the early Northern Song Dynasty, with Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties inheriting and developing the system. After its formation, Gyeongyeon system was introduced to Korean Peninsula. During Joseon Dynasty, the system gradually improved and evolved into what is known as “Gyeongyeon Politics (經筵政治)”. History books became an important part of the Gyeongyeon curriculum, with Chinese history books being the primary source. Through Gyeongyeon lectures on history, Kings of Joseon Dynasty sought to use history as a guide, to clarify Li (理), manage state affairs, and discuss and evaluate Chinese historical events and figures. History books were used in Gyeongyeon, representing an important aspect of the practical application of historiography during Joseon Dynasty and reflecting political characteristics of Joseon Dynasty.
