Abstract

With wider use of computer-based examinations, ensuring academic honesty has been a significant challenge. The traditional methods of manual supervision are limited. They are inconsistent and prone to human error. We developed an automated system to detect cheating. The computer vision and machine learning-based system observes students in real time. The system was implemented in Python. We utilize image and video processing through OpenCV, precise face and eye detection through Dlib, and fast recognition based on TensorFlow Lite for efficient operation in ordinary devices. We have a simple GUI interface based on Tkinter to initiate, terminate, and display monitoring. The system observes indicators of cheating, i.e., undue duration of eye shifts, absent faces, and extra people in the scene. The system notifies when it observes dubious behavior. The experiments demonstrated that the system effectively observed these actions under a variety of lighting setups and devices. The system operates effectively under a light computational footprint. This indicates that automation has the potential to enhance fairness and robustness of examinations by minimizing reliance upon human monitor. It shows that scalable, smart proctoring solutions are applicable in schools.
